Ebay the online auction giant has announced a global ban on sale of all types of ivory products by January 1, 2009 . After a conservation organization based in Massachusetts found out that the online auction site have become a place of trading in items derived from endangered species, among the list are ivory bracelets and figurines carved from elephant tusks.
“We feel this is the best way to protect the endangered and protected species from which a significant portion of ivory products are derived,” the company said in its blog on Tuesday.
A report released by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) says more than 7,000 listings of wildlife offered for sale on more than 185 Web sites in 11 countries. And three-quarters of the items are came from elephant products. The majority of online trade in endangered animals is done in eBay.
Every year more than 20,000 elephants from Africa and Asia are illegally slaughtered to meet the demands of ivory products. EBay has already banned the sale of guns and digital music, let’s just hope that the ban of ivory products will worked also.
