We all know that a sniffer dog plays an important part in drug detection and search for explosive materials. A group of scientist has developed new sensitive electronic nose devices that could be a big threat to man’s best friend career.
Yushan Yan, a chemical and environmental engineering professor at the University of California, Riverside and his team are in charge of the said project.
An electronic nose was developed to identify tiny amounts of explosive in a high-risk area, like shipping terminals, malls and airports. This device can be useful for military operations to detect hazard materials or even landmines. It can be useful in baggage x-ray machines or placed near a metal detector in screening areas.
According to Yan, unlike its animal counterpart the device won’t get tired, need bathroom breaks or require food and water. “[A dog] takes a lot of training and a person has to be with them all of the time. A dog doesn’t work 7 days a week and maybe will get into a bad mood,” Yan added.
Over a decade electronic sensing technologies have grown significantly and use by companies to smell everything. Companies like Coca-cola has smelling machine to identify corn syrup while some cosmetics companies have used them to smell fragrances for their perfumes.
As a dog lover no matter what kind of artificial sniffer sprouts, nothing beats a dog nose. I still trust with man’s best friend over an artificial sniffer.
