We notice the increase numbers of installed data cabling system from Cat5e to Cat6. Just a brief introduction on what is Cat6 or Category 6 cable, Cat6 is a cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet (Gigabit = 1,000Mbit/s). It features a more stringent for crosstalk and system noise.
What is the difference between Cat5e and Cat6 ?
- The general differences between this two category is in the transmission performance. Although both cable are rated for distances up to 90M. Cat5e is a 100Mbit/s cable while Cat6 is a 1000Mbit/s or ten times as fast as Cat5e.
What does Cat6 can do to my network compare to Cat5e?
- Due to its better transmission performance and more stringent specifications for system noise, systems who run over CAT6 cabling will have few errors compared to Cat5e. Which means fewer re-transmission of lost data packets under certain conditions, which results into high reliability networks who uses Cat6.
Is it recommended to use Cat6 compare to Cat5e?
- Yes for future perspective, it is better to use the best cabling available. The main reason for using best cabling because it is so difficult to replace cabling installed under the floors, inside the walls and other places which is difficult to access. According to some studies that cabling will last at least 10 years and will support 4 to 5 times generations of equipment. Also the growth of media streaming applications to each homes increases rapidly and it needs a higher data rates which are supported more easily and efficiently by Cat6 cabling.
