A Malaysian blogger was charged with sedition after posting an article which involves a top government official and his wife to a murder of a Mongolian woman. Raja Petra Kamaruddin 57, founder and editor of Malaysian Today site pleaded not guilty. He said, “We bloggers have declared war on the government. Our final objective is to change the government”. Supporters, opposition lawmaker and some bloggers gathered in court to show support.
Petra declined to post the 5,000 ringgit bail (1,600 USD) set by the judge, and choose to be jailed until October6. “I am not going to post bail. I don’t have the money”, Petra said. “I’ll be out for Christmas. Don’t worry,” he added. If Raja Petra found guilty, he will face a three-year jail or a fine up to 5,000 ringgit. Businessman named Syed Akbar Ali was also charged under the Sedition Act for posting a comment on Raja Petra’s article. Malaysia’s Sedition Act, generally criminalize activities with “seditious tendencies” which include those who express anti-government sentiments.
